Adopt a Working Cat

You provide the shelter, food, and water.

They provide the rodent control.

A win-win situation for Kentucky cats and farms alike! Our Working Cats are felines who are unsuitable for indoor living because:

  • They’re too feisty for an indoor home

  • They’re shy or fearful of people

  • Their litter box habits make them unsuitable to live indoors (and for whom medical issues have been ruled out)

There is a mandatory 4-week 24/7 kenneling period to allow the cats to adjust to the new environment. A Working Cat Project volunteer will deliver and set the cat up in your barn. We will provide the 42” kennel, litter box, and bowls. The cat must stay in the kennel 24/7 inside of the barn for 4 weeks before release. They must receive fresh food and water and have their litter scooped daily. Please provide canned food to make the cat feel comfortable in their new home.

This process greatly reduces the risk of the cat running away once released. Please consider flexibility with the number of cats you are willing to adopt, as we try to keep colonies and siblings together. This also improves the likelihood they will accept your barn as their home. After this 4 week period ends, they can be released and get to work on rodent control! A volunteer will be in touch to schedule pickup of the supplies.

Our kennel setup

By adopting a Working Cat, you agree that:

  • Fresh food and water will be provided daily for the life of the cat.

  • The cat will live in a four-sided well-insulated building.

  • The cat’s building is far from a busy road.

  • There are no coyotes or other predators frequenting your property.

  • A winter cat shelter (DIY styrofoam cooler or purchase) will be provided in cold weather.

  • A veterinarian will be seen if the cat is ill or injured. You may borrow a trap from us.

All of our cats are spayed/neutered and have received rabies and FVRCP vaccinations!

We place cats in Fayette, Madison, Jessamine, Woodford, Scott, Bourbon, and Clark counties.

$50 is our suggested donation per cat to cover their veterinary care and supplies. Your additional donations to our all-volunteer nonprofit are greatly appreciated!
