About Us

Our Story

After the sudden, unexpected death of our founder Peyton’s sweet 14-month old kitten, Jack, she was determined to channel her energy into a project to honor his life. She realized what Central Kentucky needed: a network of property owners willing to provide a safe haven for at-risk cats. The Working Cat Project was born. We started under the umbrella of a local Lexington rescue. We quickly grew and knew we needed to be our own non-profit. In June 2020, the Working Cat Project became an official 501(c)(3) organization!

The cats from our program come from unsafe outdoor living conditions and county shelters. They were unsuitable for indoor living due to behavioral issues, litter box issues, or being feral due to little or negative human contact. Usually, county shelters do not have the funding or resources to help cats such as these, and the outcome is grim for those innocent souls. The Working Cat Project is working to fill this need by adopting out these kitties to property owners, when returning to their home is not an option. We also facilitate Trap-Neuter-Return for unaltered cats so they can stay in their original outdoor location without adding to the cat overpopulation crisis.

Thank you for your support in spreading the word about our organization, volunteering your time, and donating items and funds to help us fulfill our mission!
